general commissions...Alan is always happy to undertake commissions for individual or corporate clients. He keeps no stock. Each piece is therefore a one off and original work of art.Alan prefers to work in detailed consultation with the individual client, although he obviously has a wealth of ideas, expertise and suggestions. After initial discussions about the nature of the project, the wood to be used etc, he will produce simple drawings, which will give the client a good idea of the finished piece. Choice of wood is, of course, crucial to the process and can affect the appearance and durability of the finished artwork. Whenever he can he uses native timbers produced by an excellent sawmill at Penpont, in Galloway. At this point, a price will be agreed and the commission will be slotted into his working year. (There is usually a waiting list!) A deposit of 20% of the final fee is generally payable only upon commencement of the actual carving with the balance payable upon completion, although larger projects may necessitate interim payments as agreed with the client.
